Founded in 1970 as the Pocono Boy Singers, the Singing Boys of Pennsylvania from Wind Gap has won great acclaim throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, England, and Japan. The company consists of young artists – aged 10 to 14 – selected From the ranks of the organization’s training choir who have been rigorously prepared for two or more years.
Performing a demanding repertoire spanning centuries from chant to contemporary works, programs frequently include sacred and secular classics works selections from opera and musical theatre, and a rich assortment of American folk music with choreography. This fast-moving format has been enthusiastically received by audiences on both sides of the Atlantic, throughout Japan, as well as by critics who have applauded the choir’s imaginative and versatile programming. The remarkable proficiency which the choir brings to performances has been demonstrated in hundreds of recitals for colleges and universities from Oxford to Stanford, many Community Concert Associations, and hundreds more schools and churches.
The Singing Boys of Pennsylvania has appeared with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, Rochester, Northeastern, Corning Philharmonics and many regional orchestras, as well as Music Sacra of New York, the Pittsburgh Chamber Opera, before conventions of the American Guild of Organists, American Choral Director’s Association, the Kodaly Musical Training Institute, and the International Gymanfa Ganu. They have been featured at the Harrogate Festival in Tokyo Disneyland, Wolf Trap, and sung on the BBC, and Western Networks in England, ABC in America and the NHK in Japan.
K. Bernard Schade, Ed. D., founder and director of the Singing Boys of Pennsylvania, is Professor of Music at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania. A former choirboy, he is a graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso, Union Theological Seminary in New York, and the Pennsylvania State University. An excellent organist, conductor, teacher, and vocal coach with strong background in Kodaly techniques, Dr. Schade has served as an associate staff member of the Texas Boys Choir and the St. Kilian Boychoir.
